One of the biggest hurdles that Fjord horses have had to overcome is the perception that they are a small draft pony when in fact, their biggest appeal is that they are multi-purpose. Fjords here in North America are competing in upper level open competitions, advanced level of driving competitions and Eventing. They really do it all.
The intermediate type of Fjord is the most successful in the sporting events. Some people still do enjoy the draft Type and the farming and pulling opportunities that this type provides.
The Fjord horse has gone full circle in its development over the years. As in all situations usage begets type. There was a time where in Norway the heavier Fjord was a must. They were used during the war years to haul ammunition over their mountainous terrain as well as tourists from one Fjord (the water kind) to the other and as a farm animal that was used for field work and other heavy chores. As this work diminished, the Fjord horse has returned to the multi-purpose ‘one animal who can do it all’ family horse.
Aside from the riding equestrian sports the Fjord really shines in the sport of combined driving events a.k.a. CDE. This is a 3-phase equestrian event: dressage, marathon and cones. It is the fastest growing equestrian sport and requires the willingness, temperament and ability that suits the Fjord to a T.
In most Open competitions now you will find Fjords in the winner circle against all breeds. It here that the Fjord gets the attention and makes its mark as a viable competitor.
