Steak Ride with the Ferry County Chapter Backcountry Horsemen
By Johnna Jewell
Last year, I sent a letter to a friend in Nevada. I told him that the Ferry County Chapter Backcountry Horsemen were going to have a Steak Ride. He replied... "How do you ride a steak"?
In the summer of 2006, our chapter, with George and Lu Young at the helm, started gearing up for a fun weekend at Lambert Creek Campground. Quite a lot of preparation went into the event, starting with some major clean up of the site. Terry, Maureen, Rich, Mike and crew put their best chain saws forward and got the job done quickly. Invitations went out to folks from the surrounding chapters, past poker ride participants and the general public and on July 28th we kicked off our First Annual Steak Ride starting with a Friday night potluck dinner. Saturday morning we were greeted with one of the nicest summer days I can remember. Rigs with horse trailers in tow rolled up the mountain to find the perfect parking space. Riders saddled up and headed out on the Old Stage Trail, crossed the bridge and rode up to the Kettle Crest trail over to Midnight Mountain. That afternoon back in camp the group relaxed and enjoyed each others stories as the smell of steaks grilling drifted through the mountain air making some hungry cowboys mouths water! After chowing down, Tryg Culp, from the Okanogan chapter, volunteered to be our auctioneer in what we might call "The Rock Auction". Bidders dug deep into their wallets to buy some of the finest Indian artifacts ever painted that just happened to be donated by said auctioneers' grandson. The night was topped off with homemade brownies and ice cream. Now THAT is the way you... "Ride a steak"!
On July 28, 2007, you can have a chance to ride the historic Old Stage Trail and experience this fun and camaraderie! The Ferry County Chapter Backcountry Horsemen will be having our Second Annual Steak Ride using the Old Stage Trail on Saturday, July 28th. This year we have an added feature, our Annual Poker Ride will be combined with the event. On Saturday evening there will be a steak dinner and dessert, and sing around the campfire. So come join us and sleep under the stars in Ferry County on July 28th at Lambert Creek Horse Camp in Republic, Washington. A pancake breakfast will be included on Sunday morning. The total cost for a fun weekend is only $25.00.
