At the beginning of the year, the Reining Horse Association of the Northwest committed to the following Mission Statement: To promote and encourage the showing of reining horses regardless of breed of horse. To promote National Reining Horse Association sanctioned reining competitions. To educate interested parties, contestants and spectators so that they have a better understanding of reining horse performance all while having fun.

Following a successful clinic by NRHA Professional Matt Mills, NRHA Judges Clinic presented by Matt Livengood and our first three shows we are well on our way to fulfilling that mission. In spite of record high fuel costs, the number of runs at our first three shows increased by 34% and the payouts increased 29% over 2007.

The show season kicked off with the Slide-In on May 9-11 in Moses Lake, Washington. Recent improvements to the Grant County Fairgrounds attracted the RHANW back to Moses Lake, which proved to be an excellent move. Grant County Fairgrounds brought in sand specifically for our shows to provide good ground. They are also consulting with Bob Kiser to make the ground even better for future shows.

2008 marked the first year that we have offered a Derby. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Calvin Thomas and Mary Kaplan, the Summerslide, also at Moses Lake on June 6-8, featured the NRHA approved $2,000 Added Dun Its Lucky Charm Derby. The Open Derby Champion was Hat Trick Chick, ridden by Brad White and owned by Ron Knutson. The Non Pro Derby Champion was Lindsey Bernbaum riding Espresolina, a beautiful dun mare that Lindsey raised and trained herself. In addition to winning the Non Pro Derby, this dynamic team won the Youth 14-18, Limited Non Pro, Novice Horses Non Pro and placed 2nd in the Non Pro.

Other winners of the NRHA classes at the Summerslide were Christie Batson riding Ghiradelli Chic in the Non Pro and Novice Horse Open, Aaron Doss riding Smokin Jac Cody in the Open, Jack Patton riding Chic on a High in the Intermediate Non Pro, Inger Helsen riding Fanci Silvertone in the Limited Open, Diana Schuster riding Lil Ruf Lena in the Rookie, Rebekah Frank riding Chicket Bar in the Youth 13 & Under and Katherine Merck riding Holly Pine Dun It in the Freestyle.
