PAINT SPOTS August '99
by Jeri Stone
Well the month of August has arrived and we are over half way through the 1999 Paint Horse Show Season. The 1999 APHA World Show is history and we want to send our congratulations to all the people from Zone One who made the trip and/or competed. I have attached a list of winners for people and horse from Zone One.
The largest Paint Horse Show in the Northwest happens this month - Zone One Zone-O-Rama will be August 18 - 22 in Albany, OR. It is not too late to reserve stalls (425) 334-0539 - for this show - or enter the Northwest Coordinating Committee Futurities (253) 939-8610 - which are held at this show. If you have not received a premium for the Zone One Show you can call or e-mail me and I will send you one - (360) 295-3477.We want to wish the following people a speedy recovery - Dorothy Wells and Arlie Sylvester and Don Hill who will be having surgery this month. Remember a card or note to these people would make their recovery time feel shorter. Our condolences to Rod and Linda Phillips on the loss of their eight year old black and while Tovero Paint stallion, My Painted Panda, from heat related complications. We also were saddened to hear about the loss of leading Paint Horse sire, Our Sir Prize, raised and shown by Al and Jerri Hooper of Fallon, Nevada. Our Sir Prize had to be put down at the age of 30. He was an APHA Supreme Champion, APHA Superior All-around and PtHA Champion. He was the sire of the following Northwest horses: Scribbles, Prize's Bar Link (dam of Barlink Macho Man) and First Prize Rose, as well as many other APHA champions. We were also sorry to hear that Waid Ranch in Havre, Montana has lost their Paint stallion, Red Feather Man.Kasey Krum has graduated cum laude from Rocky Mountain College with a BS in Environmental Biology.Mark and Kim Wagar of Olympia, WA are the proud parents of Michael Alan who weighted in at 6 lbs. 1 oz. even though he was five weeks early. For a person who is always super organized this has been a real adjustment for Kim as she was not ready for his early birth.Several of our Paint Horse people are taking fun trips this summer. Larry and Carol Jacobson are heading to Maryland and North Carolina and will visit their son and family on the way. Gail and Kirsten Hammer drove Janne to Jacksonville, FL stopping along the way in Missouri to see Quorum and RR Jose Cuervo, in North Carolina to see Tribute To Sierra, Prairie Gold, Perpetualized and Dominant Fleet, in Ocala, FL to see Kid Clu and some of Sockett Sensation babies then when on to Texas to see Encore's Secret, Hot Scotch Man, A Classic Clu (AQHA) and several other stallions. Sharon Sweeting traveled to San Francisco, North and South Dakota and will leave again in a few weeks for Yosemite. Jeri Stone recently returned from Houston, TX, Mississippi and Louisiana. Liz Hickling attended the recent Equitana and says it was FABULOUS. Fred and Sue Young traveled to Colorado for the wedding of their son Travis. Ken and Jan Lorenz traveled to the 1st, Annual Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, CA - they were greatly impressed. The first show of the Alberta Paint Horse Club's season was a very successful one especially for Penny Wilson and her horse Silent Bear who completed their APHA Amateur Championship.Jamie Boyack broke the 400 meter record at the Central Alberta Junior High Track Meet this last month. Just goes to show you - if you have not already noticed - that our Paint Horse kids are very versatile. One of our members recently was in the process of registering her very minimal white Paint gelding when APHA said they needed some pictures of his white spot. The spot was located on the upper inside of his left hindquarter. Well armed with camera, friends and a lot of determination they set about getting the need pictures. It became a contortionists' nightmare, hanging upside down and underneath to get the perfect shot, spreading his cheeks and holding the excess horse flesh out of the way. After about 10 pictures she rushed to her local one hour processing store and after approximately 1 + hours the developer person, a guy, came up to her and ask if those were pictures of a horse? She told him yes. Then he squirmed and said "I have to inform you the .... has a very strict policy of shredding and destroying anything that resembles pornographic material." Needless to say she about choked! She then tried to explain what the pictures were for, but being a non-horse , he wasn't "getting it", he would not look at her and his face was beet red. Teresa Stout felt very lucky to have left with her pictures. I am sure this will not be the first or the last time Paint people have this problem.Leslie Reinhardt of Fort St. John, Alberta is engaged to Gerhard Janssen and they are planning an August wedding. Leslie showed the Paint gelding High Country Red to his Open APHA Championship and is currently showing, Cattahoochie, a three year old Paint mare in reining.I would like to congratulate Lisa Stone, the daughter of Mike and Debbie Stone, and my niece, on the purchase of her new Paint Horse. Freddie Mac Flash is a six year old sorrel overo APHA/AQHA gelding and was bought from Meara Send of Snohomish, WA. Lisa and her parents live in Freeland on Whidbey Island, WA.Did you know that the economic impact of the 1999 APHA World Championship Show for the Fort Worth area is a sizeable boost to their economy? It is estimated that each dollar spent "rolls over" or changes hands an average of four times in the Fort Worth area. The 1999 total projected economic impact is $75,176,448.00!!!We are saddened to hear that due to unforeseen circumstances Paradise Mountain Paints and Quarter Horses, Jon and Denice Correll, will be selling most if not all of it's stock and moving. They hope to be back in the horse business at some point in time and we wish them well.Kathy Bystrom and her family are moving to Denver, CO. Kathy will be assisting her parents with their business - which for this summer will be grooming for her mother who shows Paint Horses and selling horse trailers for her father.Did you know that the artist that created the cover for the 1999 APHA World Championship Show Program and the commemorative poster was Joelle Smith of Bend, OR?The Idaho Paint Horse Club's Magic Valley Paint-O-Rama was a very successful show and the Tres Rios Buckles for High Point Awards were beautiful and hotly contested. Some of the High Points came down to the last points earned in the last classes. A low note to the show came after it was over when Jennifer Austin and her family were on their way home and were involved in a terrible wreck. Thanks to J. W. Christensen and crew they managed to get stopped and get everyone out including their horse, Deno Park, who was upside down in the trailer that had rolled.Kristen Shaw has recently graduated from Oregon State University School of Veterinary Medicine and is now a Veterinarian in Hood River, OR. She will also be showing her weanling filly out of her Paint mare, Paintin The City, and by The Dream Maker .Laura Canaday has sold her buckskin BS weanling colt, by Ima Cool Daddy and out of Machos Lady Lass to Melinda Hoover in Bend, OR.Rod and Linda Phillips are home in Hermiston, OR after living in Arkansas for the past few year. They returned home with several horses and have rented a home and hope to be back showing soon. Rod has bought Linda a weanling Tovero colt by Panzas Top Robin from Wayne and Bonnie Hamlin and will be showing him at the Triple Crown this fall.Speaking of Wayne and Bonnie Hamlin - Bonnie is now a Brand Inspector and Wayne is one of the top Bull Dogging and Steer Roping cowboys on the circuit and is leading the World in all Around on the PSRCA Circuit.Dennis and Shirley Murdock of Oreana, Idaho have sold their three year old filly, DSM Socs Dun Dun, to the Robert Law family in Utah.Congratulations for Linda and Monica Jesinghaus and Larry and Tamara Chastain on the Superior in Western Pleasure earned by the three year old colt, Just Zippin Around.Chad Bolton has graduated from Eastern Oregon University with honors. He has also sold his very good Paint mare, Shes Sundowner Tuf, to an Amateur in Texas who along with her son will be showing Sonny.Jeff and Michelle Parcel have recently sold their place in Eagle Creek, OR and will be moving to a temporary home in Oregon City, OR. Their address will be P. O. Box 1175, Oregon City. Their cell phone is (503) 313-4553. Also if you are interested in a complete set of the Paint Horse Journal dating back to 1983 - Jeff and Michelle will give them to you if you will come and pick them up before August 1st.Gary Swinford of Arlington, WA has sold a breeding stock gelding by Mr. Valentino to Calvin and Helena Cornehl also of Arlington.Paint Horse Show Managers might take note that beginning in 2000 you check with APHA to see what numbered week your show is scheduled on. It looks like there will be a shuffling of weeks and dates. So contact APHA and see what number week of 2000 your show is scheduled on. The British Columbia Paint Horse Club's Show is usually in May and will be in April next year.Iron Horse Ranch, Doc, Barbara and Brenda Mathis, in Hermiston, OR have bought a filly by Super Rockin Robin and out of a Sucha Fistful daughter, IHR Sucha Temptation (pending), from Pearce land & Cattle Co. in Benton City.On August 14th.
