Nebraska's Fort Robinson State Park to Host APHA's Annual Trail Ride
Looking for a getaway to wide open spaces, beautiful trails & colorful sunsets from the back of your trusted Paint? Join the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) on its 1996 Fort Robinson Trail Ride.
The ride takes place September 4-8 at the Fort Robinson State Park, located 3 miles west of Crawford in the heart of northwest Nebraska's beautiful Pine Ridge. The park is Nebraska's largest, encompassing more that 22,000 acres & offering scenic trails for country riding.
"Recreational riding is one of the most popular activities among Paint Horse owners," said Ed Roberts, APHA executive secretary. "That is one of the reasons the APHA sponsors an annual trail ride- to offer an event for members to come together, spend time with new & old friends & enjoy their Paints."
"The annual trail ride also offers a great promotional opportunity for the breed," stated Roberts. "By bringing together so many Paints & APHA members, we attract the interest of the media & generate publicity. More people are exposed to the versatility & beauty of the breed."
"Fort Rob," as it is referred to locally, was an active military post from 1874 to 1948. The famous "Buffalo Soldiers" were stationed there & the great Sioux chief, Crazy Horse, was killed at the fort. Also, the 1938 & 1940 Olympic Equestrian teams used the fort as a training site.
Three days of riding are scheduled. Each day, the ride will head out in different directions on established trails. Park personnel will relate the historical significance of the area as riders pass through.
Scheduled evening activities include a horsemanship clinic conducted by local horseman Terry Correl & sponsored by Schrade Knives. There also will be ample time to relax around the campfire at the end of the day.
According to APHA Director of Special Events, Kelly Riley, members are already showing a great deal of interest in the ride.
"Although we just launched our advertising campaign for the ride, we have received a tremendous response," said Riley. "The ride is limited to 130 guests, so members interested in participating should send their deposit in early to reserve a spot."
Cost of the trail ride is $200 per adult. Lodging, meals, stabling on the grounds & the State Park user fee are all included in the cost. Both modern & primitive camping is available.
