The Washington Reining Horse Association

The Washington Reining Horse Association was created in 1990 and is the longest running National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) affiliate in the Northwest. The club is dedicated to promoting the sport of reining in our state with shows, clinics, a newsletter and a breeding incentive program.

As host to the only NRHA affiliate series in the state of Washington, the club is growing rapidly. Anticipated membership numbers are expected to double in 1998 to approximately 175-200 members. Participants in the organization will be offered four two-day shows this year, in addition to at least two schooling shows. The four hosted shows will be may 16 & 17 in Moses Lake, June 6 & 7 in Monroe, August 8 & 9 in Port Angeles and October 3 & 4 in Moses Lake. Added money for this year's series is expected to be at $30,000, plus awards.

Although all classes have cash awards given to placing riders, Saturday class winners gain points towards WRHA awards, and Sunday class winners gain points towards NRHA awards. Therefore, there are classes for the novice who just want to "try it once" and there are classes for the rider working toward NRHA regional competitions and everyone in-between. Both Open and Non-Pro riders will find classes appropriate for their ability.

The WRHA also established a Sire & Dam Program in 1992 as a means to further the breeding, training and showing of reining horses. Stallion owners donate breedings to the club; the WRHA then sells these breeding to the public for half the advertised stud fee. This program is the driving force behind the annual Three Year Old Futurity. This year's event will be held October 3, 1998 and the Moses Lake Fall Spectacular Show. The Futurity boasts $5,000 added, plus a trophy saddle to the champion.

Any question pertaining to the WRHA or requests for membership applications should be sent to this year's club president: Michelle Maike 360/452-4805.
