Youth of the Month: Shelah Heiman

Photograph Not Available
Shelah Heiman has been riding horses since she was four years old, and as I remember, we had an old Saddlebred mare she would ride bareback to the house and trot back to the barn with her hands straight out from her sides, not even holding on to the reins, and her dad going, "I can't watch!"

She got her first show horse when she was six. Barb Christenson loaned us her 19 year old gelding "The Supreme Flame." Shelah won a lot of classes on that horse. Alas, she had to say goodbye to her good friend, "Supreme," after three years and many good times and horse shows. He is still teaching the joy of riding to other kids with owner Barb.

Since we were not of wealthy means, Shelah has had to work hard. She is now nine years old. She saved ALL of her money for over a year so she could buy her first saddle. Shelah worked all summer tacking up horses and cleaning stalls. She can get the horses out of the stall, take their tailset off, harness or saddle, bridle, drive, ride, groom the horses and put them away. She saved her money so she would be able to go to an "A" Show this fall on her new horse "Harlems Gloria." (Pictured above)

Shelah wants to be a trainer some day and is willing to work hard for it. She does well in school and likes ice skating and swimming. She hopes to have the privilege of riding in the World Championships at Louisville, Kentucky someday.
