I Do Go Home Today

They said they'd make one last call, a rescue group might help.

Then came a lady, oh so nice, who said she understood,

She opened the cage and took me out, would take me if she could.

I looked at her and kissed her cheek, she seemed to understand,

She petted me and checked me out, she said I seemed so grand.

But they she put me back in my cage, had I misunderstood?

I sat so sad, I'd tried so hard, what was to be my fate,

But as I gave up, she appeared again, and opened up the gate.

I leapt with joy to see her, she giggled at the sight,

I had to be a lucky dog, I was at her house that night.

She spent the next few days learning what I knew,

She even gave me toys and things, and a hoofie I could chew.

She taught me sit and down and stay, what fun it was to learn,

Ahh, I thought, this must be it, one of life's good turns.

Then came baths, brushes and rides, and that guy she calls the vet,

But I didn't mind, I soaked it up, how much better could it get?

Then one day we took a ride, I sat happily by her side,

But Grandma, as she called herself, seemed extra occupied.

I wondered, as she said to me that this was `our' last ride,

And when she finally stopped the car, I took a look outside.

There were people waiting there, my new family she said,

We went inside and met these folks, they showed me my new bed.

Then came the yard, all fenced and safe, Grandma she made sure,

And there were bowls chock full of food, and water oh so pure.

Grandma kissed me when she left, tears running down her cheek.

I've settled into my new home, my family, they are great,

We go to class, I am a star, I even like my crate.

When Grandma calls and checks on me, my family they sure brag,

And tell her I am happy now, and how my stub does wag.

Yes, I am a lucky dog, secure and loved and safe,

And now I wish for all my kin, to have this kind of fate.
