Youth of the Month: Sara Jo Gumm

Sara is an outgoing 12 year old at Tekoa Grade School. She is involved in School Government, Basketball and Social Director of the entire 6th grade class. Last year she maintained an A average.

Sara and her parents David and Debi Gumm live on their Ranch in Eastern Washington with sister Mary and brother Andy who help Sara toe the line! They raise wheat, lentils, hay and barley, cattle and Quarter Horses. Everyone has a job and Sara is no exception. She helps move cows, feeds horses and clean stalls, with a little yard work thrown in, to keep busy in the summer. Last year during harvest it was her job to be chief cook and bottle washer. She did an excellent job, and if she had any questions, did hesitate to call her dad on the cell phone (as his phone bill will attest to) to clarify the situation.

She is a member of the Tekoa Iron Horse Knights 4-H group led by Susan Seeley, DVM and Doug Sienknecht. Having an older borhter and sister she has been involved with 4-H for eight years. Last year she gave a clinic on Showmanship to the other members.

Riding a mare is always an adventure, but she does love her 6 year old sorrel, Uptown Di is her registered name (Diane when she is in trouble.) Sara takes riding lessons each week and has ridden with some great trainers in the area. Getting more than one opinion is great fun to her, even when she knows one answer, she will ask the same question to see if she will get a new idea.

Showing in the local open shows is what she works for. Her first love is Showmanship and she practices it everyday. Last summer she won High Point in five local shows and Reserve in one. She also won High Point at the Palouse Empire Fair.

More than anything though she loves the people, any age, any size will do, from 2 to 92. Each week she figures out where the next show will be, who is going to be there, and by Thursday she is so excited she can hardly wait for Saturday.

We would like to thank all the wonderful people who have helped, trained and befriended our daughter as without you this would not be fun. You make it worth it.

Congratulations to Sara Jo Gumm - Horse Previews "Youth of the Month"
