Youth of the Month: Sheila Erickson

Sheila Erickson's partnership with Mighty Brownie began five years ago. Since that time they've become a duo who have won numerous awards.

Many of these awards are show and circuit high-point champion. This year alone, Sheila and Brownie, a ten year old bay roan Appaloosa mare, were Spots of Fun Appaloosa Association Circuit Youth Champion, Bonner County Fair High Point Youth and High Point Appaloosa, & Spokane Interstate Fair Showmanship Champion. They were also Reserve High Point at the Palouse Empire Appaloosa Association Show in August. They participate in classes that include Showmanship, Pleasure, Equitation, Reining, Trail, Games and Jumping to accumulate needed points.

Sheila is a 17 year old Senior at Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane, WA and commutes 80 miles round trip daily from her home in Blanchard Valley near Newport, WA where she lives with her parents, Bob and Ruth Erickson. She is a member of the National Honor Society, member of a jazz choir, and is currently participating in a school musical. Her future schooling plan is attending Washington State University to study veterinary medicine and genetics.

Sheila is also a member of the Bonner County, Idaho 4-H Club, Hoodoo Hoofbeats of which she is currently historian. This year she represented Bonner County at the District 4-H Show and placed first in both Showmanship and Hunt Seat Equitation. In late October, she is representing Idaho state as a member of the first place horse judging team. She will be judging at the National Arabian Show in Albuquerque, N.M. This is not her first trip to represent Idaho at a National Contest. In 1994 she attended the Eastern National 4-H Roundup in Louisville, KY in the Horse Demonstration Contest. Her subject was HYPP (a genetic inheritable muscle disease), which she later expanded to use as her AP Biology project. At this national contest, her demonstration earned fourth place.

Sheila will continue to show 4-H, Open and Appaloosa and expand her activities to include showing Brownie's son Tenmightjustdoit.

Congratulations to Sheila Erickson, Horse Previews "Youth of the Month"
