Business Spotlight:
Half Moon Feeds
Deer Park, Washington

Half Moon Feeds has been in business since 1999. Located just North of Deer Park, about 20 miles North of Spokane, the business is locally owned and operated by Tom Ottmar, Tim Walsh, Robert Romero and Wade Harden. They have five employees.

What made you decide to get into the Mill/Feed business?
Tim and Tom live on Half Moon Prairie, south of Deer Park, where Tim's family has farmed since 1945. Tim raises most of the wheat, oats & barley that the mill uses. When the old LMF Mill on Sherman Road came up for sale, the two saw an opportunity to better market locally grown grains and hays by milling all natural grain feeds for the local area. Last year, Robert, a long-time employee, joined the partnership and recently Wade joined as a partner. Both have broadened our horizons - the group brings together a lot of experience and commitment to making the best quality feed possible. Half Moon Feeds has dealers throughout Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho, and they are currently exploring the Pacific coast market, as well.

Tell us more about your horse feed.
Based on the current knowledge of the unique nutritional needs of horses, we have developed special formulations for the performance horse and for the senior horse. Our feed pellets contain no fillers, screenings or binders, just the finest whole grains and forage products. Protein is provided only from plant sources; pure cane molasses and specially cultured yeast are added for optimal uptake of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
A critical benefit that also sets Half Moon apart from the other suppliers is that our formulations are highly specific for horses raised in the area. This balance is based upon an understanding of the proportions of the trace minerals such as selenium, copper, and cobalt, found in our region; supplementation is accomplished in direct relation to our soil composition. Rations are based on prime nutritional needs - an example of this in both of our horse formulations includes biotin for good hoof health. Special care is taken in providing proper fiber for the senior horse, but never as a non-nutritive filler.

We know you really care about what you feed your horse - we really care about making sure you are getting the best ration for your horse. We welcome your comments on ways we can help you tailor a nutritional plan for your horse, whether an athlete, senior or with special needs.

Why do you feel your feed is the best?
All our horse feeds are made from top quality all-natural whole grains and hays - never any animal by-products as do many other mills. Our rations are formulated for horses in your area, paying special attention to local mineral deficiencies. We strive to keep up with modern equine nutritionaldevelopments and include them, if possible, in our formulations. All of our rations are overseen by a nutritionist and DVM.
