4th Annual Weaver Quarter Horse Production Sale

A clear blue sky welcomed buyers and bidders to the 4th Annual Weaver Quarter Horse Production Sale held Sunday, September 19th in Great Falls, Montana. An estimated crowd of 700 plus left standing room only while a fast paced sale was led by auctioneer, Lynn Weishaar, Reva, South Dakota and pedigree reader, John Johnson, Piedmont, South Dakota.

Weaver Quarter Horses, owned by Stan and Nancy Weaver, have spent the last 25 years building up the ranch's broodmare band geared to their own breeding program. The Weaver family settled in Montana in 1888 and their Brand was recorded in 1889. Stand and Nancy's children are fifth generation to ride for the brand. The Weavers are well known for their foundation bred Quarter Horses with good bone, feet and withers. Their cow sense, cutting ability and speed are recognized throughout the industry. They have been awarded the Montana Quarter Horse Association Ranch Award in 1997, have twice been nominated for the prestigious AQHA Best Remuda Award and are recognized as a leading AQHA Breeder Referral Member.

Weavers stallion battery consists of Poco Ima Doc, a 1988 black grandson of Poco Bueno out of an own daughter of Docs Prescription, Poco Doc De Oro, a 1984 buckskin grandson of Poco Bueno and an own daughter of Docs Adonis, Diamonds Cutter, a 1982 bay son of Doc O Dynamite and a Sugar Bars/ Poco Dell mare, Doc Ima Leo, a 1994 buckskin son of Docs Decatholon and a Zaydin's Leo mare, and Go Beckwith Roan, a 1992 red roan son of Beckwith Dun and a Tiny Watch mare.

Four years ago Weavers teamed up with Treasure State Quarter Horses to put on their first sale. Owner Una Crowley, along with her parents Barb and Ted Crowley, have been a valued component to the sale. Like Weavers, their families have been ranching in the Bear Paw Mountains for many years. They stand two stallions, PC Mr Sun Peppy, a three year old golden palomino by Sunfrost and a Peppy San Badger/ Sak Em San mare and Fire Me A Winner, a 1995 bay stallion by Taylor Jess Tivio out of a King Fritz/ Win Or Lose mare.

The Weaver Quarter Horse Sale provided a keen look into a breeding program offering an outstanding set of weanlings with class, color, conformation, and disposition. The huge crowd from border to border and coast to coast watched as this years breeding resulted in sales to 17 states and four foreign countries, including South Africa, West Australia, Mexico and Canada.

Sale Averages: 69 lots, $2793; Weanlings: 42 lots, $2900; 20 stud colts: $3025; 22 fillies: $2773; Yearlings: 5 lots, $2560; Broodmares: 3 lots, $3100; Saddle Horses: 19 lots, $2748.

The high selling weanling, Lot 15, Weavers Doc Ima Sug, found his home with John Heinrich, Tucson, Arizona for $8,400. The golden palomino sired by Doc Ima Leo and out of an own daughter of Doc's Sug, who is a 3/4 sister to Sugs Gay Lady, winner of nearly $300,000 NCHA, was bred for speed, size and cow to be a top heading horse. This will be a horse to watch for in the national roping team.

The second high selling stud colt, $5,000, a buckskin, Lot #46, TS Blue San Frost, sired by PC Mr Sun Peppy, will spend time with his new owner Jay D Evans between Valier, Montana and Winona, Mississippi.

The third high selling stud colts, both buckskins, tied at $4500 a piece. Lot #26, Weavers Poco Peppy, sired by Poco Doc De Oro, went to Greg Brewer, Washington and Lot #17, Weavers Magic Bar, sired by Doc Ima Leo claimed his new home with Guy Hawkins, Texas.

Robin Walters, West Australia, purchased the top filly at $4,400, Lot #3, Weavers Poco Gal, a buckskin, sired by Poco Ima Doc had the color, conformation, cow and speed to be a top contender in any event.

Second high selling fillies tied at $3700 each with Lot #33, Weavers Go Drift, a dun filly sired by Go Beckwith Roan and a Driftwood bred mare travelling to the Lyle Ranch, New Mexico, and Lot #41, TS Toes Blazon Fire, a dun filly sired by Fire Me a Winner making her way to the Center Ranch, Texas.

Lot #9, Weavers Lady Doc Rain, a red roan filly by Diamonds Cutter and Lot #32, Weavers Two Roan Dee, a red roan filly sired by Go Beckwith Roan sold to Mike and Mary Bennett, Big Timber, Montana for $3500 each. Bennets also took home the high selling broodmare, Lot #52, Doctor Dailey Dan, a 1984 bay granddaughter of Doc Bar and Old Taylor bred back to Poco Ima Doc for a 2000 foal.

Brewer of Washington, stayed active winning the bid at $4700 on Lot #47, Poco Dakota Tivio, a grulla yearling stallion who was an intensely bred Poco Bueno and Mr Blackburn 41. He showed a good mind and top athletic ability.

"Sioux," a red dun double bred Two Eyed Fox/ Mr. Blackburn 41 gelding led the saddle horses with a final bid of $4400 to Denton Moffat, British Columbia. This outstanding nine year old gelding had done everything that could be done on a ranch from dragging calves to the fire, to sorting pairs, to chasing horses.

Volume buyers were Mike and Mary Bennett, Montana and Guy Hawkins, Texas.

Next years sale will again be held in Great Falls, Montana on Sunday, September 17th at the fairgrounds. Weavers will be showcasing the get of their newest stallion addition, Ima Bit Of Heaven. This 1996 stallion sired by Smart Little Lena and Peppy's From Heaven, a full sister to Peptoboonsmal joined their stallion line up and his colts are anxiously awaited. "Ima" has an excellent set of withers, good bone, a nice sloping shoulder, four dark feet and is a pretty red roan color. Every horse in "Ima's" pedigree is either a NCHA winner or NCHA producer. Smart Little Lena, Doc O'Lena, Peppy San Badger and Royal Blue Boon will all be on his colt's papers. He brings the very best of today's cutting horse bloodlines to their program.
