Local Miniature Horses & Owners Go To National Show!
Six adult and five youth members of the Inland Empire Miniature Horse Club made the trip back East to Columbia, Missouri for the 1995 AMHR National Show, September 8-10th.Jodi Cook, President of the IEMHC and husband Ron Mowery, flew to Missouri with club secretary Sue Millhorn and daughter Carmen several days early to prepare for the arrival of the horses that had left Spokane on September 4th. Club members Jenny Shea and Cathy Matheson and family also came in several days later. Two other Northwest couples, George and Rosemary Chapel of Livingston, MT, and Glen and Sandy Nicolls of Arlington, WA also make the trip.
Ten Miniature Horses shipped from Spokane arrived safely and in good condition after a 2,000 mile trip and some unusually hot and humid weather. Another four horses came from Montana, making a total of 14 horses representing the Northwest portion of the U.S. Fortunately, Missouri suffered an out of season cold front and the temperatures dropped considerably, making it far more comfortable for both horses and exhibitors, and more like home.
Cathy Matheson, of Worley, ID brought five girls with her, one for each of the five horses she had shipped. The girls competed in a variety of classes, beginning on Friday, and collected some top ten awards in the youth classes. Tough competition for the newest IEMHC family, but the girls were super.
Carmen Millhorn and her mare Kamiak Kandi Kiss were the first of our group to win a National title, taking first in the Amateur Exhibitor Showmanship. That afternoon, Jenny Shea and her black stallion Broken M's Dakota Spirit brought down the house in the Adult costume class. Dakota was appropriately garbed as a Spanish fighting bull and Jenny was the matador. Spectators were lining the rails and cheering "Ole" for the pair. Jenny and Dakota won the class and another National award.
DRB's Leopard Princess, owned by Kamiak Miniature Horses, won the National title for Multi-Color Mare, and Valley Rose High Lily, owned by Glen and Sandy Nicolls, won Solid Color Mare.
Kamiak Kasino, owned by Joyce Taylor of Spokane, won his two year old gelding class and was instrumental in the Reserve Champion win for Kamiak Sweetheart in Produce of Dam and the 5th place award for Say-Beau in Get of Sire.
Members and horses left Missouri September 11th, by plane, truck and van. Horses once more arrived safely and several members brushed them off good and headed to Moscow, Idaho for the last show of the season. After that, it was back out to pasture for a good roll and relaxation.
