Kaitlin Ens

Kaitlin and Junior

Kaitlin is definitely no stranger to the competitive world of horses and mules. They have been part of her life since she was three. She and her parents, Ron and Karla Ens, are members of the North West Pattern Racing Association and the North Idaho Saddle Mule Club. She and her family travel to both horse and mule competitions throughout the season. Currently a ninth grader at House of the Lord Christian Academy in Oldtown, ID, she is an A Honor Roll student and has earned the High Grade Point Average while in Junior High. Her favorite hobbies, besides horses and Mules are: art, hunting, reading and writing. Kaitlin obtained her first pony, Soda Pop at the age of six. Soda Pop truly taught her the necessity of perseverance. Next came Apple Pie. While on Apple Pie, she learned the joy of riding. Starting in 1996, at the age of seven, she and her family began to work on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. While on the Middle Fork her parents worked for hunting outfitters. This gave Kaitlin the opportunity to see over 1500 miles of pristine backcountry from between the ears of a horse and mule. In the winter of 1996 she got her first horse. Jesse is a black Morgan, with the personality of a clown. Together they won 1st place Junior Rider on Jesse and 2nd Junior Rider on Apache. She also earned her first buckle.

Throughout 2002 she again rode both Jesse and Apache. It was during this time that Kaitlin began to realize what great potential Apache had. She earned Top Junior Rider and also took 1st place Junior on Apache, Jesse placed 5th. She was extremely pleased with this accomplishment and the fact that she earned her second buckle.

Kaitlin and Apache

2002 was the first year that Kaitlin actively competed with her Appaloosa John mule Junior. In Drummond MT, together they earned Reserve Youth Highpoint Riding Mule. Three months later, they won the Overall Youth Mule Highpoint at the Spokane Interstate Fair.

Currently she has an upcoming Quarter Horse filly that has good potential for gaming. She will greatly enjoy training this young prospect over the summer.

To her, winning is an added bonus; it is continuously improving that is the most important. She is looking forward to the 2003 gaming season and is very excited to be training with Laurie Riley Performance Horses again. She will be focusing on Apache and Junior this gaming season and encourages anyone interested in Mules or horses to come join the fun.
