Youth of the Month - Shannon Flaherty

"Youth of the Month" Shannon Flaherty

Shannon Flaherty is June's Horse Previews Youth of the Month. Shannon, the daughter of Steve and Melissa Flaherty, is 14 and is a freshman at Mead High School in Spokane where she maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Shannon began lessons with Erika Pulver and started showing at age 11. She won the 12 and Under National Audrey Barret Award her first year of showing. In 1999, she won many championships and high point awards and placed in the top ten for Classic Youth Pleasure Driving of the National All Stars. In 2000, she expanded her showing to include Youth Showmanship, Youth Halter Obstacle, Open Halter Obstacle and Modern Youth Roadster. Her highlight for 2000 was going to Godyville, Illinois for the Shetland Pony Congress where she won the Classic Youth Pleasure Driving and the Youth Halter Obstacle. She was also voted the 13-17 Modern Youth Exhibitor Award for her willingness to help others at the show and her ability to prepare and show her own ponies. Shannon's love of animals has led her to the decision to become a veterinarian. Shannon enjoys down hill skiing, water sports and really is a big help taking care of the 40-50 horses at her dad's Shamrock Springs Ranch. Steve states "I'm proud to be Shannon's dad and sometimes coach, and I feel she is most deserving of the title "Youth of the Month."
