Local Reining Clubs

Hello all of you Horse Previews fans and welcome to the Annual Reining Issue! I would like to introduce you to two local reining clubs and share with you their show schedules and upcoming activities.

The first local club is the Columbia Basin Reiners (CBR) out of the Tri-Cities. This is a club that boasts well organized shows that you can show at for year end awards or you can attend their shows for schooling purposes. Their 2002 show series begins May 4th at Keith Johnson's arena, and continues throughout the summer with shows June 7th (Friday night) which is in conjunction with Summerfest, August 3rd, again at Keith Johnson's arena and their last series show will be September 14th in conjunction with the RHANW September show. CBR officers for 2002 are: President-Steve Jasper, Vice-President-Keith Johnson, Secretary-Shirley Requard, and Treasurer-Linda Brockman. The CBR has monthly meetings, occasional trail rides and is a great group of people to be around. For more information regarding the CBR's activities and shows please contact Steve Jasper at (509)582-3317.

The second local club is the Reining Horse Association of the Northwest (RHANW). This is a club that is based in the Inland Northwest. The officers for the RHANW are: President-Wayne Tippett, Vice President-Debbie Fortner, Secretary-Diana Tippett, Treasurer-Candis Claiborn and board members-Robin Congdon, Judy Johnson, Gary Johnson and Debbie Loy. RHANW has monthly meetings that everyone is welcome to attend. During the show season, the monthly meeting is normally held at the show of that month. The 2002 RHANW show series will be: May 18th in Lewiston,ID (Show contact Wayne Tippett (509)758-9179); June 22nd in Dayton, WA (Show contact Debbie Fortner (509)337-6324); July 20th at Spokane Equestrian Center (Show contact to be announced); September 14th in the Tri-Cities, this show is in conjunction with CBR and the show location yet to be determined (Show contact Steve Jasper (509)582-3317); and the Finals October 5th at the Spokane Interstate Fairgrounds (Contact to be announced). The Finals in October consist of 2 days of showing, Saturday being the reining portion as hosted by RHANW, and Sunday being the working cow horse portion that is hosted by Kaniksu Reined Cow Horse Association.

The RHANW series of shows offers a variety of classes from the green as grass rider, to the Rookie and up to the Open rider. Each show has added money in excess of $500.00, and 50% payback of the entry fee. The RHANW series has a year end banquet that will be October 26th at the Coeur D' Alene Casino and Resort Hotel where the series awards will be presented. Buckles, saddle blankets, spur straps and other nice prizes will be handed out to the 1st-4th place points winners in each class.

The RHANW is also planning some special classes at Finals in October that will include: A 3-year-old Open Futurity with an added purse of $500.00 that is sponsored by the Coeur d' Alene Casino and Resort Hotel. There will also be an RHANW member's only Non Pro class at Finals that will have an added purse of $500.00 that is sponsored by Will Rogers. There will be 3 NRHA classes at Finals; Rookie, Non-Pro, and Open with the Non-Pro and Open classes having added money of $500.00 each sponsored by the Coeur D' Alene Casino and Resort Hotel.

If you have any interest in reining, consider joining one or both of these grass roots clubs as they will offer you support in a low key show setting that will help you learn and advance as a reiner.
