The Montana Paint Horse Club

Montana Paint Horse Club is Montana's official APHA-affiliated club. While it is actually one of the older regional clubs, it is currently experiencing a surge in membership, hopefully without accompanying growing pains! We currently have approximately 100 members spread throughout the state, and a few beyond. That makes it extremely difficult to encompass everybody's local region, let alone within their particular field of interest, but we are trying to develop it into an inviting, friendly organization that can be considered more than the "Montana Paint Horse Show Club".

We are very proud of our new website montana painthorseclub.com. It has even garnered national acclaim in the form of accolades from APHA, who referred to it as an informative Club site, where a person can obtain all sorts of useful information and forms, especially pertaining to area shows. We would like to see the site become THE place where people from all of Montana and surrounding states think to come and look for upcoming events, and so we welcome input regarding shows, trail rides, PAC events, clinics, etc. Let's face it: in a state the size of Montana, many parts of neighboring states (heck - other countries!) are actually much closer to home than is the other end of this state. Also, there is so much more that people like to do with their Paint horses besides ride nervously around in a circle with lots of strangers staring at them, (but that's just my opinion!) So please send any listing of events to Gail Morris, PO Box 129, Ulm, Mt. 59485 or contact her at info@montanapainthorseclub.com

This year we are sponsoring the Fourth Annual Stallion Offspring Futurity/Show. It will be held September 20, 2003 at the Blue Ribbon Pavilion in Deer Lodge, Montana. That's just west of Butte, on the Interstate (I-90). Eligible nominated stallions will have been standing in Montana at the time of breeding for their offspring to be able to participate - another great reason to look towards some fine Montana stallions for your next breeding! The stallions can be viewed on the website, and all the necessary forms may be found there as well. We are currently applying for full APHA point recognition. Contact Patty Hill at (406) 288-3244 for more information.

We are also very excited about offering reduced rates at our 2-judge APHA Paint Show on August 23, 2003 at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, in Bozeman, Montana in order to make it more affordable for families. A Class List and Entry Form are available on the website, or through Maria Jerome (406) 388-0849.

  • Youth under 18 will ride FREE in youth and breeding stock classes
  • $40 per Judge ALL DAY Riding Fee in Amateur and/or Open Classes with $20 fee for each subsequent horse/rider per judge or $10 per class for under six classes
  • Stall Fees will be held to facility cost
  • Futurities will be $30 with 100% payback
  • One Office Charge: $10 per horse, plus the APHA $2 Fee per Judge per horse

Then, the following day a Horsemanship & Showmanship Clinic will be held with Terri Dyson-Wirthlin, so come spend the weekend, make friends, and, more importantly, have fun!

We are awarding year-end high point awards for 2003. At the time this goes to publishing, specifics are just being worked out, though it will hopefully encompass several shows and possibly other PAC events spread throughout the state. We are trying to make it something that a person who doesn't "clean up" at the APHA Show still has a chance at.

Another way in which we are trying to promote youth participation is through our $500 Scholarship, which we are offering for the first time this year to a Montana high school senior. This will be awarded in recognition of the student's academic achievements and also his or her contributions as per time, effort and participation spent in the MPHC, as well as to school and community. Qualifications include membership in MPHC for the prior two years, so all you sophomores out there, start planning now for the future. For more information, call Bob Bender at (406) 288-3244 or...you guessed it - the website!

Now, I've mentioned PAC a few times here. Are you aware of the myriad events that the APHA has included as events in which you can participate to accumulate PAC (Paint Alternative Competition) points? They include barrel racing, chariot racing, cutting, dressage, driving, endurance and competitive trail riding, games, halter, team penning, reining, roping, trail, 4-H events, and working cow horse, along with the expected western and english riding disciplines. So if some of these things are happening in your area, please encourage the promoters to apply for PAC approval - its easy, then let us know about them so we can post them. Remember, these do not have to be specifically Paint activities.

This year's Raffle will include the choice of a "Richard Shrake" Circle Y Saddle, with all the fixins, or, for those of you who already have enough silver show saddles laying around, or are lacking a colorful horse in your barn, a 2003 foal sired by Sonny Dee Rio. Only 300 tickets will be sold, at the price of $10 apiece. The drawing will take place at the Stallion Offspring Futurity in September.

All in all, Montana Paint Horse Club is going in exciting directions. Remember, if you would like to sponsor an event - show, clinic, trail ride, or PAC-approved event in your area, please contact us. Montana is a big state, and we sure could use your help in spreading the word about how great our Paint horses are.
