The Out of Town
Experience Do you by any chance like to hike, mountain
bike, ride ATV’s, snowmobile, cross country ski, ride horses or many of
the other activities that take place somewhere outside the city or your own
backyard? Perhaps you like to just sit by a mountain lake and picnic with your
family. Would you like for your children to be able to enjoy these same
activities?
At this point I have to admit, for those of you that do not already know it from past articles, I am a horseman. Horses and riding in the back country are my passion, what is your passion? If you enjoy any of the activities I have listed above then you should be aware that they are in danger of being lost. Each year more private land is being developed and we are losing more and more trails on county, state and federal land through budget cuts. Land managers from all levels, county, state and federal are loosing money due to budget cuts and the power to keep trails open. They need our support. How can I support them you may ask? There is an old cliché that time and time again has proven to be true, UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. If you participate in any of these activities I implore you to join an organization, in my case Inland Empire Backcountry Horsemen, stay current with what is happening, help on the trails, write letters or send emails as requested. We have one person in our organization whose job is to keep track of all the bills before congress and state legislator pertaining to our activities, like the Right to Ride Bill. I imagine each of you is saying “I don’t have time for that”. Do you have TEN hours a month to spend having fun, and one hour to spend protecting your right to participate in your favorite activity. Here is how it works, you come to one two hour meeting each month (this is an enjoyable time), learn what is going on, devote one hour (maybe) to write an email or letter (sometimes we write it for it you, all you have to do is sign it, put it in an envelope and mail it). That takes care of three of the eleven hours, how about the other seven? Join us on a ride or a work party maintaining a trail. Both are a lot of fun, and we need you for both. Our presence is always noted. Plus your volunteer hours at work parties are noted and used by Backcountry Horsemen to keep trails open. We need to preserve the trails. Can you imagine the consequences if we do not? Remember UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. Please join in the effort and fun so that future generations will enjoy what we get to experience now. For more information contact Ken Carmichael at 466-2225 or check our web site at www.iebch.com. Don’t forget to join us the 4th Tuesday of each month (except December) at 6116 N. Market Street at the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council Building. |
